Demment Residence
Upper Connecticut River valley, NH
This addition was prompted by the desire to
make a small functional house more suitable for entertaining.
The couple wished to recapture the ambiance of their former
chalet style home in the French Alps and comfortably host
informal gatherings.
The focus of the addition is the kitchen—expanded from
a small galley to a large work area open to a sitting/dining
room. Bright Provencal plaster and decor counterpoint the
light timber frame and white oak floor. Windows on three sides
and a wrap around deck extend the space and capture the arc
of the sun. A guest room/study is tucked into the pitched
roof above the kitchen. A new entry and stone walk welcome
guests and break up the mass of the original box. Beneath
the entry a well stocked wine cellar maintains the refreshments
at an ideal 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
